How often does a chimney really need to be cleaned?
Get an inspection once a year, as the NFPA 211 standard recommends, and a sweep whenever soot or creosote reaches about 1/8 inch. If you burn wood regularly, plan on a sweep every year. Occasional-use fireplaces may only need the inspection.
What's included in a chimney sweep and inspection?
We sweep the flue, smoke chamber and firebox, and check the damper, cap and crown. You get photos of the inside of the flue and a short written summary of anything that needs attention, so you know the fireplace is safe to use.
What is the black stuff in chimneys?
It's creosote, a tar-like residue left by burning wood. It builds up in three stages, from loose soot to a hard glaze, and it's highly flammable. Regular sweeping removes it before it can catch fire inside the flue.
What are the signs my chimney needs cleaning?
A strong campfire or tar smell, especially in humid weather, smoke drifting into the room, black flakes falling into the firebox, fires that are hard to start or keep going, or animal noises in the flue.
Do gas fireplaces need chimney cleaning?
Yes, though less often than wood-burning ones. Gas doesn't create creosote, but the flue can be blocked by bird nests, debris or a deteriorating liner, and a blocked flue can send carbon monoxide into the home. NFPA 211 calls for yearly inspection of gas vents too.
When is the best time to schedule a chimney sweep?
Late summer or early fall, before the first cold weather. From October through December most NYC chimney sweeps are booked weeks out. Booking early also leaves time for repairs, like a new cap or damper, before you need the fireplace.
Will a chimney sweep make a mess in my home?
No. We lay drop cloths, seal off the fireplace opening and run a HEPA-filtered vacuum through the whole sweep, so soot stays out of your living room. You can use the room as normal as soon as we leave.
Can I use the fireplace in my Brooklyn brownstone?
Often yes, but have it inspected first. Many brownstone fireplaces have century-old masonry flues that were built for coal or never lined, and cracks can let heat and gases reach the wood framing. An inspection tells you whether it's safe to use as is or needs repair first.
